What is social media?

26 Aug

Social media is a phrase being tossed around a lot these days, but it can sometimes be difficult to answer the question of what is social media. If MySpace is a social media site, and Mag.nolia is a social media site, and Wikipedia is a social media site, then just what is social media?

Diffusion of innovations theory

26 Aug

Diffusion of Innovations is a theory of how, why, and at what rate new ideasand technology spread through cultures. The concept was first studied by the French sociologist Gabriel Tarde (1890) and by German and Austrian anthropologistssuch as Friedrich Ratzel and Leo Frobenius.[1] Its basic epidemiological or internal-influence form was formulated by H. Earl Pemberton[2], who provided examples of institutional diffusion such as postage stamps and compulsory school laws.

The publication of a study of Ryan and Gross on the diffusion of hybrid corn in Iowa[3]was the first sustainably visible contribution in a broader interest in innovations which was especially popularized by the textbook by Everett Rogers (1962), Diffusion of Innovations (Rogers 1962). He defines diffusion as “the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system.” [1]

Technology Survey

22 Aug

…in a very low-tech way. PRINT (omg) the survey (unless you completed it in class) and turn in to me, in person, (wth) as soon as you have it finished.

Please leave comments and suggestions about the survey. Did it assess where you are with current social media tools and technology?

Here it is. Technology Survey.

Welcome to COM 160

22 Aug

Hello everyone! This is your official blog for COM 160, Fall 2010. In this course, we will be utilizing many social media tools — blogs are one of them.

This will be our first “tech” assignment for the semester — each of you will create a blog for this course. There are many tools available on the web to accomplish this — for the purpose of instruction, we’ll be using WordPress. WordPress is the #1 most used blog service. Read more about WordPress’ history here.

We will have a discussion about content delivery for the course. Let’s take a poll right now — would you prefer to have assigned readings posted here, or on MyCourses?
